Department of Marathi
Introduction
The Department of Marathi at Mahatma Basweshwar College, Latur was established in June 1970 with the objective of promoting the study and appreciation of Marathi language, literature, and cultural heritage. Since its inception, the department has played a vital role in nurturing linguistic competence, literary sensibility, and critical thinking among students.
The department offers a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum covering various genres of Marathi literature, including poetry, drama, and prose, along with literary history and criticism. Emphasis is laid on the study of representative works of eminent Marathi poets, dramatists, and novelists, enabling students to comprehend moderately advanced texts and develop interpretative and analytical skills.
Aims and Objectives
- To strengthen and consolidate the Marathi language skills acquired by students.
- To enhance students’ ability to comprehend and analyze moderately advanced Marathi literary texts.
- To train students in the interpretation, appreciation, and evaluation of poetic and literary works.
- To acquaint students with the basic concepts, forms, and aesthetics of poetry.
- To provide knowledge of the development, characteristics, and types of Marathi poetry.
- To introduce students to the socio-political influences and historical evolution of Marathi literature from the 12th century to the present.
- To familiarize students with the representative works of major poets, dramatists, and novelists in Marathi literature.
- To develop critical and creative thinking by evaluating literary texts within their intellectual and social contexts.
