History
A group of devoted and enthusiastic people of Latur, inspired by the preaching of the great saint and social reformer of the 12th century A.D. Mahatma Basweshwar, founded Mahatma Basweshwar Education Society in 1963. Initially, they started “Deshikendra Vidyalaya” to impart education to children from all sections of society. The members realized the importance and need for higher education to generate healthy, energetic, and dynamic youth, and opened Mahatma Basweshwar Mahavidyalaya in 1970 with Arts and Science faculties. The Commerce faculty was added in 1971, and the Social Work faculty began in 1983. Dr. Shivraj Nakade was the first principal of this college and was later appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad.
The college was affiliated with Marathwada University, Aurangabad, and is now affiliated with Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded since 1995. The college’s mission is to provide quality education and instill moral and human values in students. Its motto is “Dnyanmewamparamjyoti” (Knowledge is the only eternal light) and “Kayakawe Kailas” (Work itself is heaven).
The college has maintained its reputation for academic excellence, awareness of socio-economic issues, and success in cultural and sports activities. It celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1995–96 and now has over 44 years of service. Mahatma Basweshwar Mahavidyalaya remains a leading institution in the Marathwada region, offering teaching in four faculties—Arts, Commerce, Science, and Social Work—and postgraduate programs in Philosophy, History, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, and Mathematics.
